With "Ghosts of Europa", the enigmatic Norwegian artistic entity known as MORTIIS presents an album that he views as a creative liberation. "Ghosts of Europa" is the sonic testimony of an experienced and matured musician, who created what he loves most and does best: electronic rock with stylistic influences from many genres while not being bound by any that creates dark soundscapes, cinematic sonic visions, and a plethora of emotions. Of course, MORTIIS' musical handwriting is ever present. Echoes from the often quite divergent phases of his previous works can be found across "Ghosts of Europa". Yet the creator of musical worlds left hardly a stone not turned in his epic quest for genuinely new ways of expression. As a result, this cinematic and visionary album often feels expansive, strange, and darkly dystopian. In this, "Ghosts of Europa" reflects its maker's struggles while creating the album – as for MORTIIS, these tend to come into existence at the cost of friendships and relationships as well as much soul searching in order to reflect both, the album's general orientation towards electronic and industrial rock as well as the particularly wide range of stylistic influences reaching beyond its core, the choice of sound engineer fell on a most renowned specialist for precisely such sonic experiences: Luckily, Sean Beavan agreed to mix "Ghosts of Europa". His credits include working with NINE INCH NAILS, DEPECHE MODE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, GUNS N' ROSES, and SLAYER among many other greats. Just when you think that you have finally figured "Ghosts of Europa" out, MORTIIS will surprise you with another facet and fresh aspect of his richly detailed masterpiece.

Vemod - The Deepening 12,99 €

VEMOD are by no means an average band. The Norwegians exist in the liminal spaces and the crossroads of places. The trio has chiselled their sophomore full-length "The Deepening" from the same sonic granite that its predecessor "Venter på stormene" came from over a decade ago. This bedrock is found in Namsos, where VEMOD were conceived as a lifelong passion project at the turn of the century by then 12-year old Jan Even Åsli. The nearest big city is Trondheim where the fiercely individual local Nidrosian black metal scene, which refers to the city's original name, provided VEMOD with its first point of musical reference as embodied by the first demo "Kringom fjell og skog" (2004).

When the Norwegians reemerged seven years later with both the track "Moestæ Qverelæ" on a split-single and the demo "Vinterilden" in 2011, they had considerably changed. The trio had taken a step outside by strengthening elements that have already been present before: a sprinkle of the majesty reminding of early IN THE WOODS..., a dash of melancholia, and a knife tip of introvert contemplation among a wide range of emotional and vivid sonic imagery. VEMOD's musical transition finds comparable parallels in the development of French brothers-in-spirit ALCEST even though there was no direct influence flowing either way. In hindsight, the Norwegians also pioneered such currently popular styles such as blackgaze and post-black metal, although they never subscribed to either. With their debut full-length "Venter på stormene" just a year later in 2012, VEMOD opened their music to new places: A mind-blowing performance at the prestigious Beyond the Gates festival in 2013 and the legendary special show within the national treasure of the Vigeland Mausoleum at Oslo's Inferno Festival 2014 cemented VEMOD's excellent reputation even across the Atlantic.

Now, "The Deepening" arrives with a different production, which resulted in a changed overall tone compared to earlier works and the Norwegians also reached out and tapped into new stylistic strata adding further elements to their sound. Even the lyrical themes running through "The Deepening" tell of change, transience, transformation, and growth. "The Deepening" offers an opportunity to look past long held beliefs and comforting illusions. At the crossroads of VEMOD's second album at this point in space and time waits a deepening understanding of their musical world.

On their debut full-length "Mænad", Swiss post doomers E-L-R offer a new perspective on panoramic musical vistas. Bassist I.R. and guitarist S.M., both of whom are singing, and drummer M.K. concoct an atmospheric, heavy and heady brew that sounds familiar and fresh at once.

Deeply rooted in their environment as individuals, E-L-R share a shamanist quality and acute spiritual awareness with Our Survival Depends On Us from Austria or Finnish folkists Hexvessel. According to I.R., their "music is very visceral. We want the listener to delve into our sphere and become entranced in order to feel our energy. It developed in close collaboration during long nights that we also used to write down stories of our own. In this way, we were able to define and carry through our vision."

With its title originating from the name of Greek god Dionysus' female followers, who are associated with nature and excessive feasting respectively, "Mænad" follows the group's celebrated 2018 demo "In Splendour & Sedation". The album tells a tale in different stages wherein emotions are constantly shifting like landscapes in passing. "It's mainly our own interpretation of texts and poems, combined with things we lived through ourselves," explains S.M.., "often describing sceneries and events or feelings." Summing up their sound, she speaks of "hypnotic rhythms suspended in a haze of eternal reverberation."

Given E-L-R's sense of community, it is no wonder they are eager to interact with like-minded artists such as Dool mastermind Ryanne van Dorst, who guests as a singer during 'Lunar Nights', or Colin H van Eeckhout from the group's erstwhile touring partners Amenra, who lends his voice to 'Above The Mountains There Is Light' and plays hurdy-gurdy in the intro to 'Glancing Limbs'.

Katla is an Icelandic band featuring ex-Sólstafir drummer and visual artist Gu∂mundur Óli Pálmason and singer/multi-instrumentalist Einar Thorberg Gu∂mundsson (Fortí∂, Potentiam). Named in tribute to one of Iceland's greatest active volcanos, Katla creates powerful, panoramic music where shimmering guitars, crushing melodies and atmospheric density meet dark, entrancing power.

Katla's debut album, "Moðurastin", shines a spotlight on the band's hook-heavy, horizon-stretching sound. The lyrics tell tales of living in a country of contrasts; a land where fire and ice co-exist and dark winters are offset by the summer's midnight sun. Iceland: a country where insular existence has spurred a rich and vibrant culture.
"Moðurastin", Icelandic for (a) Mother's Love, might seem like a strange title for a metal album, but Katla dares to be different. What on Earth is stronger than a mother's love? Nothing. Not hate, not lust, not greed.

The second birth of The Vision Bleak

With "Witching Hour" (2013), The Vision Bleak returned to their musical and conceptual roots. They had come full circle - Schwadorf and Konstanz arrived at the end of a journey spanning five albums. They knew exactly that the band's next step had to mark a new beginning, an advance into … the unknown.

The title "The Unknown" says it all. For their sixth album, The Vision Bleak broke free from the songwriting patterns of the past and dared to compose without any bias or restriction. The result: "The Unknown" is as diverse and boisterously creative as it can get. An almost palpable intensity, "emotions that are metaphysically present", to quote Schwadorf, permeate the songs and make them sound fresher than many would have expected.

Lyrically, The Vision Bleak break new ground as well. Gone are the tried-and-trusted nods to horror classics and fictional terror, to legend and lore. What has remained similar is the vividly poetic, at times archaic language, yet the lyrics of "The Unknown" are more metaphoric, closer to the musicians' lives. Gone, therefore, are the times of "creepy and haunting entertainment" - in 2016, The Vision Bleak are facing their personal demons and the horror that lives within themselves.
Eventually, this reinvention is also reflected in the graphic design of the album. The spectacular front cover was created by no other than legendary artist Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Dismember, Morbid Angel …), who manages to give life to the world of "The Unknown" in a richly detailed painting.

So have the two masterminds really shed their identity? Not at all. Initiates will find plenty of familiar elements on "The Unknown": Schwadorf's unique guitar melodies, Konstanz' characteristic singing, the constantly gripping atmosphere, the interplay between fury and elegance … All of this also elevates the deathship captains' latest work beyond comparison - it is just a breath of fresh air that gives the music a novel shine. "The Unknown" is The Vision Bleak's second birth.

On "Sternenberster", IMHA TARIKAT take the harsh sound of their debut album "Kara Ihlas" (2019) a huge step further while at the same time staying true to their course. . His boundless ambition and utter dedication become audible in the fast and steady progression of his songwriting from the first EP "Kenoboros" (2017) and the following demo "Son Mistisizm" (2018) to the 2019 debut-full length "Kara Ihlas". Dornenreich's masterpiece

With their third album "Her von welken Nächten", Dornenreich succeed in increasing the passion of their first two albums in a substantial way: "Her von welken Nächten", that is one hour of authentic dark and dynamic intensity in nine waves. Thanks to their will to individuality that expresses itself in unique arrangements, multi-layered structures, many surprises, and extremely varied vocals, Dornenreich do justice to their main ambition - raising the intensity without stagnating in the realisation of that aim.
