"Alternative Matter" is not a standard best-of album, but a compilation of exclusively unreleased recordings and alternative versions from the archives of the band, compiled by Antimatter mastermind Mick Moss with care and passion. "Alternative Matter" features demo and acoustic versions of well-known Antimatter songs, live recordings, remixes, and also new recordings which have been conceived especially for this compilation. Intense and energetic

On "Fear Of A Unique Identity", Antimatter's first records for more than four years, Mick Moss seems to follow the only logical path with respect to his recent work. After the critically acclaimed retrospective "Alternative Matter", which in 2010 marked Antimatter's tenth anniversary, he harks back to the electronic sounds from the early days - "Saviour" (2000) as well as "Lights Out" (2003) - without swerving from the Rock-oriented way established with "Leaving Eden" (2007).

For the first time ever in 2012, Mick Moss also presents Antimatter as a complete band (featuring Latvian songstress Vic Anselmo) with which he has recorded a compact cycle of songs with a thematic red thread: In their latest work, Antimatter address social restraints and exclusion, yet not with with a colder sound, but rather the most intense and energetic music the group has created so far. Songs like "Paranova", "Monochrome" or the video track "Uniformed & Black" once more demonstrate Moss' strong songwriting abilities and enlarge upon the serious topic with musical finesse.

On towards new pastures - that was the idea of Mick Moss and Duncan Patterson, the two creative brains behind ANTIMATTER. While their first two albums seduced the listeners with a blending of relaxed guitars and darkly melancholic electronic elements, their new work "Planetary Confinement" has turned out as an acoustic, fragile, and very personal album.
“Theres no concept as a whole, but the songs are strung together by a common thread which is mainly that something is bugging us and we need to write about it in order to make sense of it all", says Mick Moss. „'Epitaph' for example deals with bereavement, and 'A Portrait Of The Young Man As An Artist' is a reflection of how the Liverpool music scene has become so obsessed with plagiarism, cocaine, arrogance and shameless name-dropping.
Asked why they chose to cut a nearly purely acoustic album, ANTIMATTER responded:"Of course the Unplugged tour was an influence. We wanted to do a session that was 100% wood. So theres a completely natural feel throughout my session - acoustic guitar, bass, live drums, violin and vocal. As Queen used to put it - NO SYNTHESISERS”

Their dark and oppressive sophomore

In the early 90s UK based bands like Paradise Lost or Anathema created a new sound. They combined heavy guitars with melancholic vocals in a totally new way and become cult acts of a new generation of rock and metalfans worldwide. ANTIMATTER, the group made up of ex Anathema songwriter Duncan Patterson, combined cinematic electronica with relaxed guitar melodies and the melancholy of Anathema "Eternity" album on last years debut 'Saviour'. The new 'Lights Out' is considerably darker. 'Saviour' was written over a long period of time and contained songs from different stages. 'Lights Out' is solid unity. Duncan Patterson's inimitable feel for melancholic melodies always shines far above all other clichés, already making Antimatter one of the most unusual groups today.

Anybody who has ever suffered from betrayal can relate to this album,...

...Antimatter-mainman Mick Moss states self-consciously about his most recent work, "The Judas Table". "I'm singing about my experiences, but I'm a firm believer that they are everybody else's experiences as well."

Throughout his life, Moss has repeatedly experienced disappointment on a personal level along with the self-doubt that goes with it. The deficiencies of human behaviour and social life have always been the proverbial red thread through his lyrics, but prior to "The Judas Table", a critical limit was exceeded for Moss. On Antimatter's sixth album, he accounts for different personal conflicts with an unusual, almost scientific poignancy and is harder on people from his immediate surroundings than ever, yet also on himself: "For 'The Judas Table' I gather together the various personalities of the people who's callous and disrespectful, backstabbing actions caused me countless wasted years of depression", he resumes. "For years I thought the problem was with me. I was always open and tried my best, but was nevertheless used and betrayed many times. This led me to believe I was worthless and must have deserved it. Now I realise the problem was with the clinically psychologically soulless people who treated me that way due to their nature, not mine."

The liberating and empowering conceptual approach is also reflected in the music. "The Judas Table" just like "Leaving Eden" and "Fear Of A Unique Identity" is essentially appealing due to its intense blend of melancholic Art Rock, dark Gothic and introspective acoustic pieces, but as a whole seems less nervous and restless than earlier records. The new Antimatter record appears to be calm and attests to a so far unfamiliar inner peace, an equilibrium found - a hint at the fact that Moss might have overcome his torturing demons?

The first album of Antimatter as solo project

Unconstrained and with tremendous force – that’s a good way to characterize Mick Moss’ performance on Antimatter’s fourth album, “Leaving Eden.” The Englishman has undoubtedly found a way to gather his own power after his composing partner of many years, Duncan Patterson, has left the band – and this power has flown into a kind of music that has quite a rocking edge at times.
“I wanted to create power and wide spaces in the studio,” Mick says. He was envisioning a “dark and laid-back rock album”, combining the hardest with the most light-hearted songs from ANTIMATTER’s history. It seems fitting, then, that Mick invited a more than competent session musician, Anathema’s guitarist Danny Cavanagh, into the studio for the dynamic recordings. The sensitive riffs and melodies do open vast spaces for Mick’s vocals – sounding self-confident and melancholic at the same time – and his personal lyrics with their introspective focus. “The album stands on its own two feet,” Mick acknowledges the changes in sound, which he however doesn’t think are that huge: “There are so many familiar elements; there’s one song with a violin lead like on ‘Planetary Confinement’, there are atmospheric parts, but now there are also the rockier tracks.” To the listeners, all of the above means that once again they are invited to sit back and join ANTIMATTER on their journey – a lively one at first, then growing ever more pensive to finally end in contemplation.
Like in that line in the album’s last song, “Fighting For A Lost Cause”: “Some things never change” – this is also true of ANTIMATTER’s haunting atmospheres…
